Friday = Fri-Yay

Hey Y’all. Who is ready for the weekend?! Although this weekend isn’t as jam packed with activities, I’m really looking forward to spending some time relaxing at the beach. I’m really hoping the weather holds out.

I plan on starting Saturday off with a nice longish run. I’m still on no set plan, but would like to get some 10 easy miles in in preparation for pacing next weekends half marathon. My stomach is still no bueno, but I have pretty much gotten to the point where I need to run for the mental release. It has almost been a complete week since my last run. While I ran on Monday, my stomach felt decent during the run and my legs felt great(!), after the run I unfortunately was not doing so hot. #TMI? Whatever.

My Saturday will hopefully include a longish run, a stop at Barnes & Nobel to buy some quick beach reads, and at least 5 hours soaking in some much needed Vitamin D. If I happen to get a pedicure or reflexology massage, so be it : )

But since it’s Friday, I’m linking up with Heather, Katie, and Clare this week for my Friday Favorites, now let’s recap some thing’s I’m loving.

  • Last weekend my boyfriend sent me this article. The idea of OTS (Over Training Syndrome) is a newish concept that is directed towards endurance athletes. I am the first to admit I am not very kind to my body sometimes, and I refuse to take rest days when I know I should. Part of the reason I scheduled rest days on my NYCM training plan is to force myself to take them. OTS affects people differently – sometimes you can recover, sometimes not so much. I have to remind myself that I want to take care of my body so I can keep being crazy and run marathons for the rest of my life.

  • Smoothies. Since this is my primary form of dietary intake, I’ve really enjoyed experimenting with different flavors. This morning I tried a peach and cantaloupe smoothie, with vanilla protein powder and vanilla extract. Um… delicious. I thought it was pretty close to a Creamsicle. Definitely not the same, but pretty close. #NotAHumbleBrag.

  • Pixar. I am openly obsessed with anything and everything Pixar makes. From Finding Nemo to Monsters Inc I’ve seen ’em all. So it should come as no surprise that I am beyond anxious to see Inside Out. Sure I may be the only person over the age of 10 (without a child) in the movie theater, but I’m damn excited. And it has my girl Mindy in it #FTW.
  • Feeling pretty thankful to be able to celebrate my best friends birthday with her. Like I mentioned last week, I went into the city for Caroline’s (and her boyfriends) birthday brunch. I loved meeting some of their friends, and I am so happy that I get to celebrate these milestones with her. Because she used to live in Dallas, it was pretty difficult to see each other. But now that she’s a NYC girl, it makes it a whole lot easy to get my Swedish fix.
  • StitchFix. So I have my next StitchFix scheduled to arrive before the Fourth of July. When I scheduled it, I had plans to return to Nantucket for a long week. With those up in the air, I’m excited to see what my stylist has picked. In the past, it hasn’t been the best experience, so I have my fingers (and toes!) crossed extra tight this time. In hopes to ensure a more successful fix, I went back to Pinterest (holy time suck) and updated my style board. Hopefully it will give my stylist a better feel of what I wear, and what I might like. #NoMorePleather !
  • I don’t think it’s actually possible for me to publish a post without mentioning running once. I’ve been using the Nike GPS and Nike+ Running app to track my runs for the last few years. Before I became a Nike user, I was a Garmin user, but their new Forerunner 620 is making me reconsider. It is a splurge though, so I think I might hold off until Christmas – thanks Mom <3.

So there you have it! Those are some things I’m loving, thinking, and smiling about this week. I hope you have a fantastic Friday and an equally amazing weekend! xo

What are you looking forward to the most this weekend?

Have you heard of Over Training Syndrome?

Are you loyal to your GPS watch? Anyone use the Forerunner 620? I feel like a traitor if I switch back to Garmin.

  1. Hopefully you’ll be feeling 100% in time for the half!! I’m heading up to a vineyard tomorrow to hear a family friend’s band play (and drink some wine 😉 )! Happy Friday!

  2. Good luck with your SF! I know how that goes. I spent so much time updating my board before my last one and had high hopes for it. Sadly I was disappointed. I am going to post a recap next week. I scheduled one more this summer to give it another shot. Cant wait to see what you get 🙂 Happy Friday!

  3. I’ve never heard of OTS specifically, but have a feeling it’s what I grew up on as a gymnast (ballet was actually really good at making sure we had a balance of different training). In gymnastics, more = better was the constant motto. I try to keep more of a balance as a runner especially with injuries I’ve had!

    1. Yep – totally burned out with swimming. I swam competitively for 10 years and ended up taking a year off after always feeling injured and didn’t even get close to where I once was.

  4. I’m in the same boat you are with OTS. It’s SO hard to take rest days, even though I know my body needs them! I’ve definitely gotten much better at giving my body the rest it deserves but it’s certainly still a work in progress. I think it’s the whole “runner’s” mentality… go farther, faster, get better… it’s tough to turn it off some days and realize that it’s okay to sit on the couch and binge watch netflix. ha.

    1. So true. I usually take my rest days during the week so I have other distractions like work/friends/chores because on the weekends I know I have so much time that I’d love to spend outside running!

  5. Taking rest days is something I’ve been pretty good at lately but that article was interesting. I need to pay more attention to pre-hab, foam rolling and stretching if anything. I love Pixar movies…they always tend to be funny, sincere, tear-jerking and classic. Have a great weekend!

  6. As someone who has totally ruined my body thanks to overtaraining for years and years, I’m much more conscious of it now. I think it’s something you can’t be told- you have to learn it for yourself and realize what you’re doing to your body. For me, when I realized I wouldn’t be running in 2 years, let along 30 years from now doing what I was doing, I reevaluated everything and now I make sure to pay attention to how my body is feeling. It’s a tough one.

  7. I hope you share the results of your Stitchfix! I used to do it a lot and it was a ton of fun, but lately it’s all been duds. I might try again in the fall….seems like they have better things for colder weather! Have a great weekend 🙂

      1. You will do great! Just enjoy the experience and have fun with it. I like to come in at least a couple of minutes or so before the targeted finish time to give yourself enough wiggle room. You are a strong runner so I have no doubt you will excel with flying colors!!

  8. I just found out about a duathlon on Sunday, so I am seriously considering doing that! Running and biking I’m cool with, but not swimming, so this sounds perfect!

I use the Garmin 220 and I love it, but I also don’t use it for every run. Sometimes I just bring a normal, non-GPS watch and then map my run later.

  9. I really want to see Inside Out, mostly for Mindy too! I’ve been enjoying smoothies more now that it’s hot outside. I’ve got ten easy miles on the schedule for marathon training(even though I haven’t nailed down a plan yet!). Have fun weekend!

  10. GIRLLLL SOOOO NOT TRUE ABOUT being the only person in the movie theater over the age of 10! 10 year olds cannot see movies without their parents, LOL – but seriously, NOT TRUE AT ALL – soooo many adult references, freaking amazing! Pixar made this movie for adults just as much as kids! PROMISE!

  11. You know I have to bring Crohn’s into view with the discussion of OTS, right? Geez, I feel like such a downer. I think that we as Crohnsies need to be really careful and wary of OTS. Our bodies typically break down more quickly and take longer to rebuild. Thus why I run 3 days a week, but my mid week runs are at about 8 miles, and then I supplement with spin.
I really hate that I keep talking Crohns with you. Instead HURRAH FOR FUN SHINY RUNNING THINGS

    1. Haha very true. It’s tough because I’ve had success with high milage running weeks and definitely found the best results when I train at high miles frequently… but I’m doing the best I can to recover from my latest flare properly to go into my next training cycle healthy and ready to attack!

  12. I love Pixar and Disney movies also! We own Frozen, Tangled, Brave, Monsters University, all of them, on DVD.
I just got my issue of Outside in the mail and need to go read that article right now. I’ve done a lot of reading on overtraining syndrome and related stuff like female athlete triad because I find all of that science-y stuff so interesting.
Have a great weekend and get lots of vitamin D!

  13. I am most looking forward to some apartment decorating tomorrow and my long run (hope my legs are ready for it!) I have a garmin but I never wear it. I forget it most days and on the days I wear it, I am too impatient to wait for it to find a satellite. I need to get a new iPhone armband so I can start using strava. Thanks for reminding me! Time to go to Amazon…

  14. OTS is definitely becoming more common, as more and more athletes are getting into endurance events and setting the bar high for themselves. I used to think that I didn’t need much rest, but I soon learned after getting a coach that rest days are key to recovery and performance. That was a great read.

I actually want to see Inside Out too. It seems like it has a really good message for younger kids/teens (and parents).

My husband is out of town this weekend, so I am having a girl’s weekend. Tomorrow I am going stand-up paddleboarding while a friend does an open water swim, and then on Sunday I have a bike ride and brunch planned with a friend. Looking forward to both!

  15. I LOVE Finding Nemo! I really can’t wait for Dory to come out 🙂 I had a small bout of OTS and I think it really held me back. I learned how important rest was and it helped my running SO much! Good luck on your 10 miler! I hope everything’s OK before and after!!!

  16. I’m so pleased that overtraining syndrome is getting lots of attention at the moment. It’s so important to take care of your body! I’m the worst at listening to my body which is why I’ve taken up running 3 or 4 times only to burn out or get injured. I’m currently writing a post on how I’m gonna make running sustainable this time round 😀

  17. Ah yes, rest days 🙂 They really do help our training and our bodies in general. It’s so great that you’re making the conscious effort to take more rest days! It’ll be worth it.
Mmm creamsicles were my favorite kind popsicle when I was a kid. I need to make a smoothie like that!

  18. I’ve heard of over-training but didn’t know it was a syndrome. Very interesting!

And, I love my Garmins! I now run with the Forerunner 220 and am in awe of it’s awesomeness. The battery life is killer, GPS functionality works both indoor and outdoor, I love the simplicity of the run/walk feature, and especially love how it alerts me to each.
