Day In the Life & WIAW 6/30/15

I always liked when bloggers did a “Day in the Life” post. I think it’s an interesting perspective on how people balance exercise, eating, work, and family life. I wish I had done a post when I was working in NYC as that was definitely a bit more interesting (but if I didn’t have a blog then, did commuting even really happen?).

So let’s get right to it. I decided to document a Tuesday because they’re my most active. So instead of “I went home after work and watched Bravo on my couch until I went to sleep” I thought I’d spice it up a bit.

I’ll also recap my day of eats… primarily in photo form because how much description can I really give of food other than “it was good”?

And as always, thanks Jenn for hosting!

Tuesday: June 30th, 2015

5:45 AM: Alarm goes off. As someone who does NOT like to snooze (the death of me), I actually snoozed. Not once, but twice. I hop out of bed (6:03 AM) and know that if I can at least get my contacts in, then I’ll be awake.

6:20 AM: Walk down the three flights of stairs in my apartment building as my “warm up” for my run. Huge over achiever…

6:23 AM: Hold my arm up to the sky in hopes that my GPS watch will then connect quicker. It doesn’t.

6:25 AM: Start my run.

7:15 AM: Finish up. A little over 5 miles at an easy pace. Cool down by walking up the same three flights of stairs while reviewing my mile splits. Again… really about this pre- and post-workout grind.

7:20 AM: Had high hopes of completing a 25 minute arm workout. Chose to eat instead. #Priorities.

7:25 – 7:45 AM: Shower, get dressed, make bed, clean up any laundry in my room. I have no idea what it is. Maybe its that I’m 27. Maybe it’s living in my own apartment. But I hate coming home after work to a messy room. Some days it just happens. But it drives me nuts. If I don’t clean or have time to clean in the morning, I will as soon as I get home.

7:35 – 8:15 AM: Make breakfast, pack my lunch. Wash any containers in the sink. Sit down to eat and publish my blog post. This is usually the quiet “ME” time I enjoy every morning. In the transition from my old job, I really have come to appreciate sitting down and relaxing before my day starts. Part of the reason I struggled with commuting is I always felt rushed from the minute I got up to the minute I went to bed. Make the shuttle. Make the train. Make the subway. Get to work on time. Repeat at night. It was enough to drive anyone crazy.

Smoothie in a SoulCycle mug. Best way to start my day !

8:20 AM: Leave for work.

This has nothing to do with my daily life. Except I’m in my Jeep. And I just like the picture because Kona is a creeper.

8:30 AM: Get to work.

8:30 AM – 1:00PM: General work duties. Currently this is teaching myself how to code. Things I never thought I’d be doing…

1:00PM: Lunch time! Is it weird that I always look forward to my next meal. I think I anticipate lunch so much because just a mere 5 hours earlier I packed it. It’s like I have a present and know what it is, I just haven’t been able to open eat it yet. Is that weird? Egg whites and homemade broccoli and quinoa patties (they’re in there I promise!)

I swear it was a lot better than it looks.

1:15 – 5:15PM: More work. More coding. More confusion. Culture at work is to eat at your desk. Not too many structured breaks, and certainly no lunch hour for me to sleep on a bench outside in the sun… I mean to read my book.

5:30PM: Arrive home.

6:00 PM: Head out to RunClub.

6:25 – 7:30 PM: Get in a glorious run. A little less than 5 miles (10 total for the day). I really enjoy running doubles to increase my milage. I usually use Tuesdays as speed work, and since I’m just getting back into consistent running/training, I find running with my peers extra motivating.

Pre RunClub Selfie… 80% humidity = Nervous Runner : )

7:45 PM: Get home, make dinner, shower, think about stretching (I don’t…) and lay on the couch in a glutinous (can it still be if I just ran?) fashion and watch all the reality TV shows my heart desires.

Chocolate Kale Smoothie with some PB2 on top 🙂

9:30 PM: Get into bed.

10:30 PM: Finally pass out. Need to get better about removing technology from the bedroom at night. Hi CandyCrush. I will beat all your levels someday. #LifeGoals.

So there you have it folks! A little sneak peak into my wild and crazy life!

Do you have a favorite day of the week? What’s the favorite part of your day?

Anyone else try to schedule in “me” time to their daily routine?

Morning or nighttime workout? I’m all about the morning workouts… RunClub is the only thing that guarantees an evening workout for me!

  1. Definitely a morning worker outer! I’m too pooped/unmotivated to do it any time after 1pm. Plus too weighed down by the day’s foodstuffs 🙂 I used to schedule me time before my commute too! I really didn’t like to speak until I arrived at work haha.

PS LOVE your necklaces in your run club selfie!

  2. I love day in the life posts. Mainly because it never ceases t amaze me how much people can fit into their day. On the other hand, it also reminds me how boring my day to day life can be. I would have to pick a “good” day to do a day in the life post haha.

    1. Haha oh please I totally picked a good day. Otherwise it would’ve been like “5:30 PM – 11:00 PM binged on Netflix….played CandyCrush….” haha #BORING haha

  3. Love day in the life posts! maybe my next WIAW will be like this..so interesting to see. It sounds like our work is really similar. I also have to do coding occasionally and it’s always a challenge but helps change things up a bit! What language are you learning?

I’m usually an evening runner, but I love running/working out in the morning. I usually sleep through my alarms though or talk myself out of waking up at 5AM to run..so I have to bribe myself to get up!

    1. Currently I’m working in Python… definitely a steep learning curve for me! Haha. So impressed by nighttime runners… I usually confuse my PJs for running clothes if I try to workout after work. Whoops! Haha

  4. I’m definitely a morning exerciser, too; I’m rarely motivated enough to do anything after work, so I’m with ya on that one! I think Thursday is my favorite day, but I can’t really tell you why-ha! I eat lunch at my desk, too; no time for breaks, and lots of people make me jealous of their lunchtime workouts, etc. Love this! Thanks for sharing, Jamie!!

  5. Morning or lunchtime running for me. I have zero motivation to run at night–all about some trashy TV at that point in the day ha! I love your giant SoulCycle mug! Have a great day 🙂

  6. As you know I’m trying to become more of a morning workout person. I’m really liking it so far! I’m really worried about what I’m gonna do when my mileage gets higher, though – I’m not as speedy as you so anything above 7 and I’d have to wake up before 5AM, which seems excessive to me. But we’ll see! However, the one workout I will always do in the evening is speed work – to reap the benefits of speed work I need to do it at a time of day when I can run faster, plus, I don’t want to be totally spent before a long work day 🙂

Nice post! I like day in the life posts, this is probably the most detailed one I’ve ever seen!

    1. I’m with you… I tend to have more effective speed workouts in the evening… I have to eat less throughout the day, but my body does better with some fuel than first thing in the morning.

  7. Currently, my favorite day of the week is Wednesday. Because it’s my rest day and I’m stinking tired. I am slowly (read: glacial pace) becoming a morning runner. It’s been too damn oppressive in the evenings. And I’m finding that if I run in the morning, I actually come home, garden, clean my house, deal with Drunk Otis et al., AND have time to blog and/or fall asleep to the sounds of Andy Cohen on WWHL. Who knew?? Gotta love a Bravo Binge. 😉

    1. Haha do it!!! And so that chocolate smoothie is : chocolate vega protein powder, 1/2 cup almond milk, 2 handfulls of ice, 1/2 frozen banana, 1 cup spinach, 4 pitted dates, cinnamon, sprinkle of sea salt, topped with PB2. Pretty sure I could eat it for every meal!

  8. I’m definitely a morning runner. I work 10am-8:15/8:30PM so I would much rather run in the morning and start my day off on a positive note that wait after a long day at work (just what works for me). Plus when I get home from work I just want to relax!
I schedule “me” time in the morning and I love it. I eat breakfast, read my devotional and blogs I follow (like yours!) and drink my coffee. Its a great way to ease into the day after my run and shower. I hear you on not liking to feel rushed all morning long!

  9. I am definitely a morning runner and love that my post run breakfast is my me time. I can’t believe how great your new schedule is !

I know how much the Fairfield county drive-bus-train-subway to the city commute can drain your soul, it’s why we have an apartment in NYC – my parents did it for years. What I couldn’t believe was there were a few people in law school who lived out in FC/Westchester/NJ with their families to save $$, and commuted all the way to Morningside Heights for school!

  10. Haha I love your commentary. I totally consider walking down my 4 flights of stairs my warmup, and walking from the elevator to my door as my cool down (we can’t go up the stairs, only down in my apartment). And YES to holding your arm in the air for your garmin to work faster. It never does. Oh, and I’m super anal about my apartment being clean, but especially my room. My bed must be made before I leave for work and clothes put away. I did some of that this morning, actually. Luckily my roommates are pretty clean too so my apartment never looks like a mess.

My entire life is “wake up, run, go to work, eat, work, eat, work, eat, lay on the couch watching netflix.” I can’t even be bothered with run club at night anymore haha too much effort to shower twice in the same day. And no- I never stretch or foam roll even though I tell myself I will. I think that makes me a fake runner.

    1. Showering twice a day is probably the worst part of my week… honestly I think it’s such a waste of time haha. It’s really pathetic that it’s that much of a struggle but I really can’t stand it. You’re definitely NOT fake runner… there are plenty of days when I’m laying on my couch watching Jeopardy like a 70 year old and see my foam roller in the corner and I’m like “mmmmm i’d rather not”. Haha

    1. Haha I have a sticky note on all my meals that says “take picture” … I have a memory like a goldfish. Haha and the runger is a problem too… sometimes I start eating and have to make it look like I didn’t just take a huge bite out of my lunch!

  11. Hi! I just found your blog through a comment you left on someone else’s. I loved this post of yours…I have to say though, I am SUPER impressed you ran twice in one day. Like that makes my legs and everything else hurt. And I like running! Haha

  12. Hahaha I’m glad I’m not the only one who sticks their arm in the sky to get the Garmin working a little faster. I also can’t stand coming home to a messy room and am all about looking forward to that next meal. Great double run too!!

  13. Oh, I love the day in the life posts! Cute photos too! I don’t like running in the morning but if it’s my only choice then I get it done. My favourite time is at night after dinner—that’s when I’m the fastest and it feels effortless. I reserve things like track and tempo runs for the evening.

    1. I definitely do find I have a bit more energy in the evenings for speed workouts. But long runs… I’m WONDERFUL at procrastinating so AM runs or it ain’t happening 🙂

  14. I’m definitely a morning runner. That way I can come home and stuff my face with breakfast (my favorite meal) afterwards. I always look forward to my next meal as well, and it’s a huge problem because I get on Instagram right after breakfast and everyone on the East Coast is posting lunch, so I start thinking about lunch at like 9 am. West Coast problems?

  15. I am always thinking about what I am going to eat next 🙂
I used to be all about early morning runs but lately it is after work. I am energy zapped these days but just got approved for IV iron infusions so hopefully once I have some level of iron in my body I will not be so exhausted all the time!
I come into work early 7:30/8 and that is my quiet time before everyone else gets here! I also try to leave 4:30ish so that I can workout but not too too late, bc grandma status I like to be in bed before 10 and also have time for some Netflix in there 😉

  16. Oh man, I’m ALWAYS gonna look forward to my next meal… I never stop thinking about food. Even when running, my thoughts are ‘What am a gonna eat after this?’ HAHAHA

I’m definitely an evening workout person. I can only workout in the early morning if I plan on running with other people. I wish I were a morning person…but yeah, it doesn’t happen.

And as for Candycrush…I’m a little ashamed to admit that I’m up to level 1000-something… ah, don’t judge! I’m just really good at it and fly through most levels 😉

  17. I’m such a morning person for working out. I struggle with PM workouts big time but trying to get back into my two-a-day regime.

Wednesdays are my favorite day of the work week. Although today is my first day back at work since Thursday so it feels like a Monday 😦

    1. Ugh long weekends are the best, but it makes coming back to work so much harder! I hear you… I’m definitely still trying to find my groove with two-a-days. I think I’ll be trying to get them in once or twice a week.

  19. Love it.!! I feel like your days are totally how I wanted my life to be like before I had my daughter and got married. haha. little mean to say, but they make my life so much more hectic.!!
I’m such a morning runner also, I totally don’t run when I put it off till the afternoon.

  20. I love having at least one meal a day of “me time”. Usually that’s breakfast or brunch, whichever I happen to be having that day. On my days off, I like to have breakfast and lunch as me time. Basically I read twitter and other articles that excite and educate me. I save the trashy stuff for before bed 😉

  21. I so so so want to be one of those hard-core runners that works out in the morning, and I know I keep saying it, but I am trying. Morning are tough though! 😉

And, I totally love day in the life posts. Thanks for sharing yours, you’ve inspired me to add some structure to my day. Wish me luck! 😉

  22. Love this! That chocolate smoothie is to die for. I never run twice in a day – I think I’ve only done it once. I have a few of those planned this time around though, we’ll see how it goes! Your day looks great.

  23. I always find it fun and interesting to read about people’s typical days. Do you usually run twice a day? How often is run club? I would struggle with that one. I am a one and done type of person. Haha. I have to get my workouts done earlier in the day and love running in the morning. Evening runs rarely happen for me.

My favorite part of the day is the morning when I can catch up on work, emails, blogs, etc. I feel like my brain is really sharp in the morning too and I can get a lot done. My days vary and are flexible, so every day tends to be a little different. I’m not sure I have a favorite day of the week, but I love the weekends when I can spend time with my hubby!

    1. I usually run twice a day once a week. Occasionally I will run in the morning and then do 30-45 minutes of cross training at night, but most I will double is twice a week. The hardest part of doubles for me is having to shower twice. I’m so lazy haha.
