#BreakYouMake Project

Since it’s Thinking Out Loud ThursdayI wanted to share with you the #BreakYouMake project. Chobani Flips wants us all to share who in our lives deserves a break! It can be a family member, my fitspiration, a local first responder, or even a fellow blogger. And I want to know who inspires you! If you want to learn more information about Chobani’s #BreakYouMake project, please click here! (Not a referral link!)Thinking-Out-Loud So without further ado, I present to you my #BreakYouMake idol. Emily Abbate

Emily is a sorority sister of mine from college. We were in the same pledge class, and quickly became friends. Looking back at this time I can’t help but smile. Both Emily and I were starting out on our individual fitness journeys, but neither of us knew it yet. I had just started training for my first half marathon and Emily just began running. We shared a passion for the same sport. But this story isn’t about me, it’s about Emily.

Emily is the most determined person I know. I don’t think there’s a better way to describe her. Passionate. Witty. Smart. Are all adjectives that come to mind, but at the core, Emily is inspirational.

Emily is a writer herself and has openly documented her battle and journey with weight loss. I have linked some of her own writing in this post as Emily is most definitely more eloquent than I. And plus… who knows her story better? When Emily and I met in college she was 70 pounds heavier, a size 16 pair of jeans.

The summer before we met, Emily began walking and running up and down her driveway as a way to lose weight. Each day she’d go just a little bit further. Emily persevered and before she knew it was running a half marathon.

Then another. And another. And then a marathon. And last year, Emily ran the New York City Marathon. Her journey there was not easy, and it took years and years, but she did it. In fact, she crushed it. She ran NYCM, in the windiest conditions, in under 4 hours.

Emily and I still kept in touch. She has a career she loves, a total dream job if you ask me, and she is still marathoning. Next up, the Dublin Marathon. Casual runcation. #Envy. And after that? Emily will be trying on being a triathlete for size. Best believe I’m always excited to track her bib for her races, and see what an incredible athlete she has become.

Emily, you inspire me and so many others. You’ve showed us that if we keep chipping away at that really big goal, we will get there. Congratulations. : )

  1. What a great story, thanks for sharing!! My dad inspires me–he has run countless marathons/ultras despite several injuries and obstacles. He is 60 years old and is still going after it!

  2. What a great story and an awesome way to recognize your friend! My mom inspires me. She’s my #1 fan and is always waiting at the finish line for all my races–which always keeps me motivated. She is also the perfect example of aging actively: she’s a month away from retirement and has more energy than me!

  3. What a fun post, Jamie! I’m sure Emily appreciates your support and vice versa; y’all are pretty awesome gals! A local running friend of my was recently featured on the Runner’s World website; she has just undergone a major knee surgery that may change her running life forever…and she’s an Olympic Trials qualifier. Instead of wallowing around, she set a new world record for the 5K with crutches – ha! She’s pretty inspirational. Thanks for sharing this with us!

  4. Oh what a great story! Thank you for sharing 🙂 my aunt is my inspiration and actually is the reason I’m in Europe right now . After she left her abusive relationship she joined the military and headed to Germany, ended up meeting her Irish husband at a bus stop and brought him home to Canada. Here she is a successful strong woman that is doing what SHE wants to do. Actually she’s studying to be a health coach at age 46 just for fun because it’s something she’s always wanted to do! I love how goal driven she is!

  5. Oh wow! What a beautiful post! Emily sounds like a great person and a true inspiration!

My inspiration is my mom. She has battled severe Rheumatoid Arthritis since she was 17/18, and doesn’t let it get her down. She was given the option of a wheelchair bound life or a fight, and she chose the latter. Everyday she inspires me to be the best person I can be, and to never give up when faced with struggle. She deals with tremendous pain everyday of her life, but only those closest to her know it because she doesn’t complain and lives her life to the fullest. There are things she can’t do- like run- and that inspires me to not take things for granted. I ran my first marathon for my mom and will continue to do so.

  6. Jamie, I’m so flattered by this! Thanks so much for writing it, and remember that you too are an inspiration to so many people around you. Keep writing, and keep running. L&L (for old times’ sake)

  7. I am inspired by Rich Roll. Yes, he is a celebrity and gets paid to speak, but I cannot deny the impact he has had on my life. In my personal life, I am inspired by local runners on my running team. They are awesome people who do amazing things in the community in addition to their jobs and running. I feel empowered just by being with them.
